Overview
Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lawrence Cannon, hosted the foreign ministers of G-8 countries for a meeting on March 29 and 30, 2010, at the Château Cartier in Gatineau, Quebec.
The meeting addressed the major issues affecting international peace and security, while continuing to promote respect for democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Canada proposed three priorities for the meeting: nuclear non-proliferation, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and capacity building to address security vulnerabilities. Participate in the discussion
Last winter, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT) invited Canadians to participate in eDiscussions on global peace and security priorities in the context of Canada’s G-8 presidency. The eDiscussions, which are open until April 2, will help contribute to the development of Canada’s foreign policy. Canadians could also take part in more informal discussions using social media platforms such as Facebook.

About the foreign ministers process
G-8 foreign ministers usually meet twice a year, in the G-8 host country each spring and on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly each September, to consult and coordinate on the critical political and security challenges facing the world. G-8 foreign ministers address thematic issues such as non‑proliferation and disarmament, terrorism, transnational organized crime, peacekeeping and peace-building, as well as critical country or regional situations.
